Paula Ware is managing director of MAP Archaeological Practice. She is responsible for developing and growing the business with over 30 years experience working as a professional archaeologist in a commercial environment. The company has grown substantially in the last few years and now has a team of 35 archaeologists.
When these archaeologists discovered a remarkable Iron Age chariot burial during the final stages of an excavation at Pocklington, East Yorkshire, in 2017, along with an impressive 164 burials and 74 square burials, they did not realise that more amazing discoveries were to come.
At the end of another seven-month excavation on the site – undertaken in advance of a 200-house development by Persimmon Homes Yorkshire – two Iron Age barrows were revealed, the contents of which archaeologists on site have described as ‘most impressive, with no British parallel’.
The site has produced three rare and very different chariot burials, and the associated grave goods are shedding new light on the rituals accompanying burial rites.
Two of the excavations featured on BBC’s “Digging for Britain” and one was voted Current Archaeology’s Rescue Project of the Year 2018.
