Working hand in hand, archaeologists and scientists are using new technology to unlock some of the mysteries of the past. Joann Fletcher and Stephen Buckley are at the forefront of some of these developments and return to talk to us about some of the ground breaking work that they have undertaken in recent years.

Joann Fletcher is an Egyptologist and Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. She has undertaken excavation work in Egypt, Yemen and the United Kingdom and has examined mummified remains in collections around the world. She has worked extensively with museums in the UK and around Europe. She makes regular media appearances including the recent highly acclaimed BBC2 series  “ Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher ” and her many publications include Cleopatra the Great (2008) and The Story of Egypt (2015).

Stephen is a Research Fellow in the Department of Archaeology in York. His research has been on the materials used in mummification and in burials in the ancient Near East. He has worked as archaeological chemist for excavations in the Valley of the Kings and has also investigated two bog bodies in Ireland and mummified Roman, Yemeni and Iranian remains. Alongside Joann, he worked on the Channel 4 award winning programme, “Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret” and more recently discovered new evidence suggesting that the origins of mummification started in ancient Egypt much earlier than previously thought.
